School of Language Studies (SLS)

The School of Language Studies (SLS) at JSU is committed to fostering a deep appreciation for languages and cultures while equipping students with the skills to thrive in multilingual environments. We provide a welcoming, supportive atmosphere where students form meaningful connections with faculty and peers, creating a collaborative community that promotes academic success and personal growth. Our mission is to prepare graduates who are not only language proficient but also culturally aware and globally competent.

SLS is dedicated to developing language professionals who can excel in diverse fields, from education to translation and interpretation. Through its two departments, the Department of Translation and Interpretation (T&I) and the Department of Teaching of Language (TOL), SLS offers specialized training tailored to student career goals. T&I students master the art of translating and interpreting between languages such as English, Tetum, Portuguese, and Indonesian, while TOL students gain the skills and qualifications to teach academic English effectively. With a curriculum that blends theoretical knowledge and practical application, SLS prepares graduates to contribute meaningfully to Timor-Leste's linguistic development and engage with the global community.
